A domain name is the address people type to reach your website. It is the sign that tells visitors where to go. If people cannot find your address, they cannot visit your site.

Why a domain name matters

Your domain name affects:

  • How professional your business looks
  • How easy you are to find and remember
  • How search engines and visitors perceive you

Whether you use WordPress or Shopify, your domain shapes how customers see your business.

What makes a good domain name

Do

Keep it simple, easy to spell, and easy to remember. Match your brand where possible.

Avoid

Hyphens, random numbers, overly clever puns, and unnecessary complexity.

Examples of solid domain names: yourbrand.co.uk, yourname.com, yourbusiness.studio.

If your ideal name is taken, try clean variations. Add “studio” or “digital”, use .co.uk instead of .com, or choose another professional TLD.

How your domain fits into a website project

Once you have a domain, it must be connected to your hosting. That requires DNS, the system that directs traffic to your site.

WordPress

If you are building a WordPress site with me, I handle DNS configuration, SSL setup, and the domain connection.

Shopify

Shopify handles hosting. Your domain needs to point at your store. I configure that during setup.
