DNS is the internet’s address book. When someone types your domain, DNS tells their browser where your website lives.
Key DNS record types
- A record
Points your domain to your server's IP address. Used for WordPress and most hosting setups.
- CNAME
Used for aliasing, often for Shopify stores or subdomains.
- MX records
Direct email to the correct provider (e.g. Google Workspace).
- TXT records
Used for security and verification (SPF, DKIM).
Why DNS matters
DNS affects:
- Website uptime
- Email delivery
- Website speed
- Store performance
Wrong DNS records mean broken sites, lost email, or slow loading.
If you are setting up business email on your domain and already use Google tools, Google Workspace (affiliate link) is usually the cleanest option.
WordPress vs Shopify
WordPress
Your A record must point to your hosting provider (e.g. xCloud). I configure this for you.
Shopify
Shopify needs a specific CNAME and A record setup. I handle the connection during store setup.
