Transferring a domain is not risky or complicated. It just sounds that way. Here is the process.
Step 1: Unlock your domain
Log into your current registrar and unlock the domain you want to transfer.
Step 2: Get your EPP or auth code
This is your unique transfer key. Your registrar will generate it for you. You will need it at the new registrar.
Step 3: Start the transfer at your new registrar
At Cloudflare, Namecheap, or Porkbun, enter your domain and choose the transfer option. Follow their steps and enter the auth code when asked.
Step 4: Approve the transfer emails
You will receive confirmation emails from both the old and new registrars. Approve them. Some registrars use a link; others require you to confirm in the dashboard.
Step 5: Wait for the transfer to complete
Transfers usually take 1-5 days. During this time, your website and email stay active. There is no downtime.
When to transfer (and when not to)
Good reasons to transfer:
- Lower renewal costs
- Better DNS performance
- Cleaner dashboard
- Preparing for a redesign
When not to transfer:
- If your domain was registered less than 60 days ago
- If your email depends on complex DNS and we are not managing it
- If Shopify recommends leaving it at your current registrar
I handle domain transfers for clients regularly. For more detail, see Where to buy your domain and Connecting your domain to hosting.
