Losing access to your domain disrupts your website, email, and brand. These basics reduce the risk.
Enable auto-renew
The simplest protection. Domains do not expire unless someone forgets to renew them. Turn on auto-renew at your registrar.
Keep payment details updated
Expired cards are a common reason domains lapse. Update your payment method before it expires.
Maintain WHOIS privacy
Most registrars offer free privacy that hides your personal details from public records. Enable it. It reduces spam and unwanted contact.
Do not ignore registrar emails
Registrars send two types of emails that matter:
- Renewal notices
- Verification requests
Read them and act when needed.
Use a secure password
Your domain account controls your online presence. Treat it like online banking. Strong password, two-factor authentication if available.
What happens if your domain expires
Expired domains can be renewed during a grace period. After that, they may enter redemption and become much harder to recover. Some get re-registered by others. Prevention is simpler than recovery.
