Security isn’t optional. Good hosting gives you a strong base; the rest is about keeping that base and your site in good shape.

What good hosting does for you

Firewalls

Traffic is filtered before it hits your site.

SSL

Encrypted connections (HTTPS) are standard. See [How SSL works](/insights/hosting/how-ssl-works/).

Malware scanning

Many managed hosts scan for known threats.

Server monitoring

Issues are spotted and often mitigated before they become outages.

Backups

Regular backups so you can restore if something goes wrong. See [Backups and recovery](/insights/hosting/backups-and-recovery/).

Patches

Security updates applied to the server and often to the platform (e.g. WordPress core).

Managed hosting takes most of this off your plate.

What you still need to do

Keep software updated

Themes, plugins, and apps should stay current. Outdated code is a common way in for attacks.

Use strong credentials

Admin and hosting logins need strong, unique passwords (and 2FA where available).

Avoid the cheapest hosting

Budget shared hosting is often a weaker security environment. See [Why cheap hosting causes problems](/insights/hosting/why-cheap-hosting-causes-problems/).

Rely on SSL

Your site should run on HTTPS. Good hosting makes that straightforward.

Use backups

Know where your backups are and how to restore. Managed hosting usually includes this.

Ecommerce

Shopify includes strong platform-level security. WordPress can be just as secure when it’s on quality hosting and kept updated; WordPress care plans help with that.
