Analytics is understanding how people use your website so you can improve. You do not need dozens of dashboards. You need a few essential tools and clear interpretation.
Why analytics matter
Analytics help you understand:
- How people find your site
- Which pages they visit
- How long they stay
- What actions they take
- Which channels work
- Where to improve
Without tracking, you guess. With tracking, you can make informed decisions.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
GA4 shows visitor behaviour. It answers:
- How many people visited?
- What pages did they view?
- How long did they stay?
- Which channels sent them?
- Did they complete a goal (e.g. form submit)?
You do not need every report. Focus on Traffic Acquisition, Engagement (Pages), Events, and Conversions.
Google Search Console (GSC)
If you use only one SEO tool, use Search Console. It shows:
- What keywords people use to find you
- Which pages appear in Google
- Indexing issues
- Core Web Vitals
- Mobile usability
Check Performance, Pages, Indexing, and Experience. See Technical SEO for how it connects.
Fathom Analytics
Fathom is a privacy-first, cookieless alternative to GA4. It is:
- Simple and clean
- Fast to set up
- GDPR-friendly (often no cookie banner)
- Lightweight
Fathom does not replace Search Console. It can replace GA4 if you want simpler behaviour data.
GA4 vs Fathom
| GA4 | Fathom | |
|---|---|---|
| Learning curve | High | Low |
| GDPR | Needs cookie banner | Cookieless, often no banner |
| Data depth | Detailed | Minimal but useful |
| Best for | Ads, complex funnels | Small businesses, clarity |
What to track monthly
- Total visitors
- Organic search traffic
- Top landing pages
- Top search queries
- Engagement (time on page)
- Conversions
- Google Business Profile metrics (if local)
- Indexing issues
- Core Web Vitals
Review monthly. For active campaigns or new sites, weekly checks help.
Cookies and compliance
If you use GA4 or any cookie-based tool, you need a cookie banner and compliant policy. Fathom often avoids this. If you use other cookie-based tools (ads, chat widgets), you may still need a banner.
